I could go all of the modifications myself, wouldn’t need labor other than paint. When selling a custom vehicle, you don’t get your labor costs back.

The difference is the amount of sheer human will it took. This wasn’t an accident, or an engineering oversight. It was decisions from the top down to deliberately do this. Get over it.
The difference is GMs problems were caused by incompetence versus VW which actively designed a system to circumvent regulations. Of course VW will get the book thrown at them, it’s a deterrent to prevent other companies from doing the same in the future.
