I think you’re totally right, and wow, now I wish someone would write an in-depth article comparing the characters of Rory and Marnie and how they’re written. I also think that the Sherman-Palladinos seem to have a real loathing for Millennials that comes out in how they write Rory, but they still want the audience to

I totally get that and agree with you; I loved Rory and really related to her in the first three or four seasons. Rory only became spoiled in the last few seasons, but increasingly so, and apparently it only got worse as she got older. Honestly, I think the show inadvertently proved that Lorelei was right all along -

She’s looking into the camera with a serious, defiant look on her face. She does not seem to be inviting someone to subjugate her. That for me is what takes the male gaze out of this. She is completely self-possessed, and her exposure seems entirely her conscious choice.

I think the really annoying part isn’t that she felt that way (like you said, no such thing as a perfect feminist), but her apparent confusion as to why people felt that way. When I see people who held some of the views I had (and am now embarrassed of), I don’t act like I don’t know where they’re coming from. I

It is possible to criticize a woman’s version of feminism (or discuss how their art makes you feel) and still be a feminist yourself. And if this is “bashing” then it’s pretty mild.

I can’t remember who said it (I always want to credit this to Terry Pratchett), but one of my favorite quotes on the subject of creativity is something like: “The ideas of the world are in a giant pot, everyone is constantly adding to it and taking things out. Two of the greatest crimes in writing are claiming you

It seems a bit suspicious. All of fashion is a bit of everyone ripping each other off, but its so disappointing to see a woman trying to bring up her community through her artwork and entrepreneurial endeavors be undermined by a large company,

You must be new to Jezebel. We cannot like ScarJo because she is  privileged, but mostly because she is a White Woman, possessing of White Feminism. It is not clear how this is different or worse or more strict or less nuanced than any other feminism, but we are required to Disapprove of her (and all other celebrity

Yes. I’m an old ass punk rocker and I’m not ashamed to say I fucking love Lorde.

Hell yes, been wondering where her next LP is!

we do!

$10 says they do an Ivanka sketch with ScarJo.

This article is what happens when Trump doesn’t tweet for 24 hours. Sad!

but in this case because she’s a woman and a WOC at that, we’re supposed to find it empowering? I don’t understand this attitude. Narcissism and greed are not empowering.

That’s so sweet and wonderful :) Thank you!

This is a really good response in that it gives her the benefit of the doubt AND also gives the most generous possible reading of her work. I think it can be very hard not to respond to a critique of capitalist feminism without inserting our personal experiences—ourselves—into the equation. This type of calculation is

I think the point being made is that the capitalist system is inherently designed to keep people down and to do damage to them. By attaching this sort-of “empowerment” lens on what amount to personal minutiae we’re doing a huge disservice to the larger issues of actual equality and parity.

I think I’m just in a really bad mood today but this interview pissed me off. “Oh no, feminism is too mainstream so I need to call myself something else! People who call themselves feminists who don’t work to solve every single problem in the fucking world and also overthrow capitalism every minute of their lives

I feel the same way about the changing the last namediscussions that go on around here. Keep your name, change your name- do whatever the fuck you want- but stop claiming that the reason you chose to take on someone elses name is feminist because I have no attachment to my family nameor I want the whole family

Do you think it’s possible to be a feminist and not devote every action of your life to feminism?
