You know what else doesn’t make a car fun to drive? An automatic. So if they’re going to take that fun aspect away then they’d better at least give you some power when you mash the gas.

OMG can everyone please shut up about the “hey 335 is plenty, that used to be a huge horsepower number!”
Part of the concern with that is the unknown weight and cost. 335hp would be amazing in something like a GT86 even if it cost a little more. If this new car comes in at north of 3200 pounds, or worse, in the 3500 pound range, then it’s got significantly less power than competitors - competitors who are also probably…
Golden age is right. As in cars that are heavy like gold and cost a small fortune. I mean cars have always cost money and best one especially so but to the weight... 335 HP sounds like a lot but it’s probably going to be in a car 500 to 700 lbs heavier than that kind of power was in the past.
I am with you on this, I would never buy a GTI unless it was an old one just for fun. even if I got one for free I would just sell it.
And you are right on hat front. Further, I am not trying to hate on you either. This is why I come here, people are honest with their opinions.
You know what, I’m a big VW fanboy (the type who would buy a GTI without even bothering to cross-shop other hot hatches), and I’m not even mad at you. We’re all allowed to have our colorful (heh) opinions on here, including irrational hatred. Even I hesitate to recommend VWs to anyone. I perceive them as less reliable…
I wouldn’t drive a GTI unless it were free. I mean entirely free, like, not just the car, but fuel, insurance and maintenance covered too. Basically, a company car. That’s the only way.
The transmission alone puts me in the civic plus the price of parts and rarity of repairs compared to VW. Plus I want people to know I have a sporty car and not just what looks like a base VW. (stock)
I’ve driven them, and love the idea of them, but unpopular opinion or not, I’m with CY on this one. Why put myself in an unreliable car? No performance is worth that.
I would still buy a GTI were I a wealthier man with money for maintenance and part replacements.
His hate is a bit strong, but I agree in general that the GTI is an overrated car. The clutch is way too light, the shifter feels plasticy, the steering is vague, I don’t like the interior design. It’s not a horrible car, but as a supposed driver’s car it’s pretty numb.
I just don’t care for VW as a whole. Worked for 15 years as a Euro tech and the VW’s really start falling apart around 70k. Plus they sent those cheater TDI’s over here to fuck up our air for years........ so yeah fuck VW and Audi also, they’re shit too.
If you’re gonna spew, spew into THIS.
LOL, Carrie Underwood.
Back around 1995, I worked in a consulting gig in Dallas for about a year. At the end of that time, the best thing I could say about Dallas was that it isn’t Houston.
From what I’m seeing in AutoTrader, you already get a sticker below MSRP on a “new” TDI and on toppa that, $5,000 cash back AND 0% interest financing for 72 months. Sound better?
“They’re so good that 7,000 of the 11,000 new 2015 TDIs in dealer inventory release for sale in April were gone in just two months.”
I don’t think it’s “snobbish” to say that you enjoy the mechanical interaction aspect of driving cars. If you’re happy with a car that shifts for you, then I’m happy for you. But I enjoy the satisfaction that comes with rowing my own, smoothly. Lacking that, driving becomes less special to me as an experience. Sure,…
