A whole bunch of mapping robots *and* direct radio contact with the ship who also had a 3-D with his position and people who could have guided him out via that communication just like Google Maps or Waze of something.

Prometheus had some good ideas but was both too boring and the characters too stupid to get reasonably engaged with. Once the scientists started playing with an alien oil snake with predictable results I nearly checked out. The Prometheus rolling on its edge like a giant doughnut while Theron outran it (instead of…
Xenomorphs were scary because they were weird and unexplained. Totally “alien” in every sense of the word. The more movies you make about them, the less weird and unexplained they become, so they become less alien. Maybe this property was never meant for a full-blown franchise.
See? When I see stuff like this, it just kind of reinforces my thought that it’s ultimately the “studio meddling” mentioned multiple times in this article that’s the culprit for the declining quality.
This is a nice sentiment but a few years ago I remember the discussion of doing away with the gendered acting awards and the conclusion was “we’re not there yet as a society” because the fear is if they combine the categories men might win more.
I get what JLC is doing but we’re not there yet. It’s a nice thought tho.…
What a cool analysis, and so true about how immersive the the scenes feel! This didn’t make it in the final cut of the article, but Korine said that in preparation for writing the screenplay he watched Miami Vice many times — he was definitely drawing inspiration from Mann’s style here.
Did AVClub just publish an interesting retrospective essay that isn’t clickbait about some topic-of-the-day?? Does The Herb know you snuck this through?
Great article on a wildly good movie
The leak was in 2010 when Tron Legacy came out.
I get that a lot of people wanted Angela Bassett to win, but calling out Jamie Lee Curtis’ win as “nepobaby-ism” is just an insane complaint. I would bet that over half of the Academy voters couldn’t even name one of JLC’s parents, let alone both. And she’s 64 and never had an Oscar-worthy role before this. Even if…
I think the magnitude of EEAAO’s sweep is actually being understated today. It’s now one of only three films to ever win three acting awards (the others being Network and Streetcar Named Desire) and it’s the only one of those to also win Best Picture. On top of that when a film wins seven awards its tally is usually…
Best moment of the night was the audience singing Happy Birthday to James Martin when An Irish Goodbye won Best Short.
I honestly think Fraser either didn’t think he’d actually win or was so overcome that he was clearly just processing it all in real time
This year stands out as a “did no one plan their acceptance speech except Ke Huy Quan?” Brendan Fraser’s speech made my parents so uncomfortable they had to fast forward. Also.... I expected something more put together from Michelle Yeoh? I have to go back and watch Fraser but was he even fumbing/misplacing his words?…
Travolta’s reference to Olivia Newton John was a gut punch.
I think the strangled cries of Racism are going to be a harder sell this year, but keep fighting the good fight.
It’s been said, but Adam Driver really does look like someone tried to draw Keanu Reeves from memory. That picture is just a stretched out John Wick but with a goatee instead of a patchy beard.
Yes, specifically for Swank’s grand mal seizure of a performance. It’s truly stunning, like your sister coming onto you.
“…is about as funny as a high-school textbook left out in the rain.”
You say “PG-rated dad jokes” like it’s a bad thing.
