I was in marching band too. My experience was different than yours and hazing was not something that happened where I was and shouldn’t be acceptable anywhere.

I used a factor 10 welding hood with an additional level 10 shield taped over the top. I have an afferent pupillary defect that really messes with me in light changing conditions and am mostly blind in one eye. Not damaging my good eye was pretty important.

I am not wealthy, am somewhat lazy on occasion, also sometimes an asshole but I do have a welding mask on hand. Of course, I live in rural east Texas and welding masks probably outnumbered the little paper glasses by a wide margin.
