@bloknayrb: Yes, it can be done natively. However, that involves constant effort to block or remove applications as they appear. FB Purity does all that work for you so you never have to see the junk in the first place.
Facebook can basically do this natively. If you click on the little "x" that pops up when you hover over an annoying post it gives you the option to hide that entire application.
