Usually, it relates to jamming. More than likely in this case, however, he just forgot that he had a chambered round or one in the magazine before dropping it as he was clearing, which would fit with the rest of the stupidity he demonstrated quite capably.

While I can easily think of a couple reasons the weapon went off that are accidental and would be beyond his control, the more you read about this the weirder this gets.
