Ah yes, the good old "Well they'll do something else, so we should do nothing".

Consequences. At some level it has to come down to establishing consequences for misbehavior. If people don’t face consequences for their words and actions, some of them will feel empowered to be utterly horrible shits to other people.
The online world should be no different than the physical, in that there is nothing wrong with expecting, and demanding, a modicum of politeness and civility in our interactions with each other. And it’s very easy to see that comparison in action, because when people act or speak in ways they wouldn’t dare in real…
Yeah... I’ve seen some people be like “report my team” in Overwatch chat. I proceeded to report that person instead :]
i can only assume the comment section to this article will be much dissembling and equivocating to minimize the results of the survey. us gamers seem incapable of acknowledging the baked-in toxicity of our community.
Rocket League does this. Lets you know if your report got somebody canned. Last night, had somebody just blurt out the N word. I hope I get his notification tonight when I play.
“The irony therein is that these people who are complaining about harassment, are likely harassing people themselves. It’s a circular situation.”
I take exception to this, you jerk.

Commenting for truth and to point out that when you dig into the stories of the “toughen up” crowd you often find a lot of projecting because they are trying to mitigate their own shitty behavior.

The other 26% must only do coop with friends.
The report button is my favorite button. Getting that pop-up that they’ve taken action is so cathartic that it more than makes up for any shitty behavior I’ve been subjected to.
“65 percent of the players surveyed experienced “severe harassment,” which includes “physical threats, stalking and sustained harassment” while gaming online.”
WHAT?! CAN’T YOU READ?!?! This is the internet, kid, where every interaction is a battle! Get thick skin or GTFO! *RANDOM GRUNTING NOISES*
Every time a new Overwatch character comes out, I think about getting back into the game but then I remember the toxic-ass community and just keep living my life.
“the of we my.sentative healer”
The problem with “John Gabriel’s Greater Internet Dickwad Theory” is it makes the false assumption that anonymity is the primary cause of poor behavior. In reality the kind of people who go on an online game and act horrible to strangers are really not that much different than the guy who seems entirely pleasant at…
Because it doesn’t create a fun experience for anyone. I don’t want to micro-manage other people while i’m trying to play a game. It’s one of the main reasons why I don’t play online games anymore.
Save for possibly The Mandalorian there don’t appear to be any ‘gotta have it’ options on there. I’m sure I’ll end up subscribing eventually but looks like it probably won’t be at launch.
This is a weirdly thin line-up. Weren’t they supposed to have everything?
