IMO it does borrow from the internal/external styles in (e.g.) QiGong where external is in line with physical conditioning and exerting control on the physical world & internal on mental & spiritual control.
One of the problems is, the love story just wasn’t that believable to me. I didn’t feel it.
I quite liked the “tempted by the light side” angle - is presenting the Jedi as the bad guys again, giving in to that temptation would represent a fall from grace for Kylo.
From a ”real world” perspective, the climactic scene with a high ranking member of a powerful and militant religious group confronting a democratically elected leader with murderous intent could have been presented with more sympathy to the Anakin/Palatine viewpoint.
