Old Windows computers have no problems running Windows 7. But Windows is made by Microsoft which is a software company. If they are able to make their software run on more computers that benefits them because people will buy the upgrade and install it.

The vast majority of custom ROMs are not stable enough to stand up against a ROM update released by a carrier. Cyanogen Mod, the biggest/most popular custom ROM out there, still doesn't have beta builds out yet for CM9/ICS. It takes time to make a good ROM.

They can throw something together in a few days but it will be a pre beta release. Carriers don't release updates until they are stable. It is not an accurate comparison in any way.

And it's a pretty bad official official reason. If Siri is meant to be used from afar then why is holding the phone up to your face one of the ways to activate Siri? Why does every person in the Siri commercials hold and talk directly into the phone when using Siri?

Don't forget about all those TV commercials where the people hold the phone right next to their mouth when talking to Siri.

I think you are right. They aren't actually changing things. This is the current policy. It applies to all Google services. It lists the ways that they collect information then says

In actuality the thumb thing was ridiculed because it was just a green arc drawn over a phone. No stats about the average thumb size, nothing about how you hold your phone. On top of that many many users with larger phones can touch the whole screen with their thumbs.

Left out of the article is that there are plenty of 4+ inch screens on Windows and Symbian phones as well as Android.
