Not sure which Bogdonavich movie (either Last Picture Show or Paper Moon) but he had a tussle with the studio because by then -1971 and 1973 - black and white film and the equipment needed to use it were more expensive than color.
Fortunately he won - I can't imagine either film working in color.

I think until Romero, zombies, though certainly out and about in pop culture and horror, were most often depicted as mind controlled slaves. Plantation workers, unstoppable killers, whatever your temp needs might be.
