I honestly don’t see the argument here. Someone hacked in to the DNC database and stole a lot of personal information from them, which then leaked through Wikileaks. To argue that the party responsible here is the DNC is like arguing that the homeowner is responsible for the burglary since someone was able to do it.

There is no greater good here. Your argument about devaluing the information is tenuous. It assumes that the people who hacked the database were interested in the financial information. This type of hack was for political reasons, not financial reasons. It is more likely that the group involved was not planning to

No they should be criticized for this shit. Not everything should be subject to public review. There are morals. Obvious ones. Like not sharing credit card and personal information of Joe Blow from Montana simply because you want to “uncover” government secrets. Lets fuck over a bunch of innocent people so we can

Yes it’s harming innocent people, but...

There is a difference. there are leaks that directly inform/protect innocent citizens from deception from an entity that has the power to impact their lives in a harmful way. And then there is the unprompted publication of information that uses the harm of innocent citizens in order to editorialize or leverage power.

Yes it’s harming innocent people, but the blame should be instead directed at whomever is responsible for the leak in the first place.

I disagree. You’re talking about victim blaming. Like a girl that got raped for wearing a short skirt or something.

I don’t think wikileaks should be criticized for the confidential information in its leaks. Yes it’s harming innocent people, but the blame should be instead directed at whomever is responsible for the leak in the first place.

That’s fucking idiotic. People illegally hacked the DNC and then transferred those files to Wikileaks. Pretending like there’s some kind of ethical high ground Wikileaks can claim because they are not allegedly involved in the original crime is bullshit.

As someone who had their identity stolen and needed to deal with getting a new social security number, I criticize both. The DNC for being vulnerable and Wikileaks for willfully putting people at risk. Leave the names, fine. But socials and credit card numbers? Fuck them

The person originally responsible for the leaks should be blamed, yes, but though such blame is warranted, Wikileaks should ALSO be held accountable, as the subsequent deliberate release of such private/personal information will likely be harmful to many people, and Wikileaks most certainly knew that.

GTFO. There isn’t a single person working with or at wikileak that doesn’t understand the harm of sending out people’s personal information like this. And the “value of transparency” on this is zero. Providing the CC or John Doe who gave Hillary 25 bucks has zero useful value to interested readers. However, the risk

the ole “that slut was asking for it” defense. I hope you don’t have a daughter.

There is legitimate news value in publishing details of a video (possibly recorded with consent) of a celebrity to show that the celebrity has lied and is a racist. There is no news value in publishing the credit card information of political donors, where the identity of those donors is already public.

So you would have no problem if someone posted your SSN, credit card info, and passport info onto a popular website for the whole world to obtain and use as they see fit. Good to know.

“Yes it’s harming innocent people, but the blame should be instead directed at whomever is responsible for the leak in the first place.”

If someone leaves their house unlocked and they get robbed, yes it’s partly their fault. The robber is still a dick though and deserves blame as well.

Yes it’s harming innocent people

Also, if the data were filtered, that would put a price on the content. That content then gives financial incentive to aquire the personal data which means people would be profiting off of the data by selling it to bad people...
