And sanitation! Remember what the city USED to be like?
I might not have thought of him, @avclub-2dd78e6d27abfc8092491a5b76d415fa:disqus, but he was on the Nerdist podcast a few weeks ago (& he was amazing—no, no, REALLY amazing, not just Chris-Hardwick-thinks-EVERYbody-is-amazing amazing).
The A.V. Club
Doesn't it pretty much HAVE to be Doug Jones?
I really need to re-read The Last Battle. I remember it being one of the best in the series, but maybe as a kid, & just in it for the adventure, it was easier to enjoy? I'm sure I didn't pick up on the allegory, ham-fisted or otherwise.
The Silver Chair was always my favorite, though I hadn't re-read it since I was a kid. It holds up, & remains my favorite. When The Boy was a baby, we used to do "read & feed" at the 5:00 feeding time. Usually I would feed him his bottle & Mrs. Neophyte would read to us. It gave us a nice excuse to revisit some…
Ages ago, back when we still lived in the DC area, I read an interview with Clancy in the Washington Post Sunday magazine. He came off as a breathtakingly arrogant jerk. The one quote that really stuck with me—and this was, what, almost 20 years ago?—was about how much of a loser you are if you don't make a…
Not overtly at all, iirc. We don't really find out what Gandalf was up to—or what he knew, & when—until LotR, & even so some of that stuff is relegated to appendices, or even Unfinished Tales
@avclub-0f2aab038be93ff407d92af691001e73:disqus : It's been a while since I read the book, but iirc all the dwarves are referred to as "son of" or "brother of" somebody. So, all dudes.
Ceci n'est pas une pipe!
The live Stan Lee ep of the Nerdist cited above is great fun—a rare example of a podcast I've listened to more than once. But I agree with the assessment of this week's Stan Lee mini-episode—amusing but not great. A tip: "Excelsior!" means "Higher!".
Hilary don't play dat!
That's the thing I find most frustrating about Bachmann's repeated re-elections. As a constituent, I don't see how you justify re-electing someone who has done absolutely nothing for the district. All she's done is make the MN 6th a laughing stock. (Luckily, my House rep is the bad-ass Keith Ellison.)
I like her fine—and I disagree with you that she has no assets—but I don't see her winning. Whether she deserves it or not (she doesn't, IMO), Hilary has always been a highly polarizing figure. I have no doubt that I will live to see a female president, but it ain't gonna be Hilary.
"I didn't write that! Sounds more like Dickens!"
Don't forget the prequel, It Was What It Was.
Check it out!
They should have built it on a hill, @avclub-1e2184e9a38acddfb65b66905ad70f9a:disqus , & named it The Matherhorn.
Oh, so THAT'S what it's all about!
