Don't get confused or forget that religion only exists through the actions of people (if all people would stop ALL religious activities, it'd be gone and all related fictional literature will be just that: fictional literature).

(I think) it reduces image quality on data the human eye can not, or can barely see. Hence the comparison tool on the site itself. The technology works better the larger the images get, but you'd be hard pressed to find any visual difference, even at the highest zoom levels. It even retains meta-data!
