I'm not defending them, but it was a decade ago. My understanding is that the LDS Church has reconsidered its stance on gay issues. They're also currently a major pro-immigrant bloc in the Republican Party.

Also, as far as I know, Mormons don't (no longer?) kidnap and beat those people who decide not to pay it.

No one believes it because Johnny Hart went off the rails in his last decade, but B.C. was a riot well into the '80's. Wizard of Id was even better. Hart was doing absurdism in comics like nobody else until Larson came along **30 years** later.
