It's not well known, but after the riots and the Gates years, the LAPD realized they weren't doing a good job of their core mission in a demographically diverse region. They've spent a lot of effort and money retraining officers and working on community outreach, and it now has a solid reputation in the community.
Family Circus is not a good panel, by and large (Sundays were pretty funny sometimes).
