If the federal government didn’t make it so easy to get cheap student loans (we’re talking undergrad here, grad school loans are still extortionary), then colleges would charge less because they wouldn’t be after that sweet federal loan/grant money since there would be less of it on the market. A friend who churns credit cards for travel points does this but instead of cancelling (and the resulting credit ding) he downgrades the card to the version that doesn’t have an annual fee. Then he just lets it sit dormant until it’s useful again. His credit utilization ratio is probably 5% at this point :P
