The actual reasoning behind the name being “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII” isn’t because of naming conventions, per se, but rather, due to the storyline issue from Final Fantasy 13-2.

The problem is here that the word “episodic” isn’t actually used by Square-Enix. They said it would come in multiple parts.
