I can see how people dismiss it as bitterness, but I truly appreciate how Tom gives a candid, funny voice to what it feels like when you're a struggling artist beating your head against the wall.

If running out of lives doesn't set you back at all, they're a useless vestigial feature. If it sets you back too much, they're an unnecessary time-waster. But I think there's a narrow band between the two where it can be a decent feature.
