They were written in the 1920s, if memory serves, so they have a very strange worldview.
Well it might have some value as a theory if there were a distinct absence of people willing to jump off of things. All those millions of years of selecting for people who don’t like to jump off of things and all. However, Youtube suggests otherwise.

Dark = evil because in the past, darkness was literally dangerous. It’s about night and day before we had the power to illuminate the darkness. This trope is thousands of years old, and has literally nothing to do with race.

Are you kidding? She was a terrible cop. She spent most of the run persecuting the wrong guy because she was angry at herself for screwing him. Even when she knew he was innocent, she still persecuted him.

They suggested there were circles, with the inner region being family-friendly, and it getting more adult as you go out. But how they squared that with violence happening in the town, and also many of the missions involved “going out” into the wilderness I don’t know.
But notice there were different types of hats, of either colour, indicating warrior, merchant, priest, farmer etc. So you didn’t have to literally play a white-hat or black-hat, but there were roles in between.
Maybe it’s like a Silent Running-type world outside, where there’s no green space left and no animals. We don’t even know where it’s set really, it might be on the moon or inside an asteroid.
