If they were making money, then Deadspin’s new owners did a bad job killing a cash cow for no reason. But I haven’t really seen any evidence that they were or even assertions by Deadspin’s staffers that they were.

They found a way to confine an epic, galaxy-wide civil war into one star system where no one ship moved in relation to the other (except the kamikaze and the random Canto Blight ship which could come and go at leisure)

I viewed it more as an origin story for the whole rebellion. They did three movies on the origin of the Empire after all.
