I'd have to say they're not symbiotic simply because it's all one organism. you said it yourself: Apple controls everything in production so the product as a whole is the experience, not the physical device or the software on its own.

actually, I heard in between korra and avatar, they released some sort of comic or similar medium where they explained a few things. one thing that came up was the discovery of a hidden air temple with more sky bison and probably an excuse for any other plot holes they found.

from uncharted, you should know naughty dog isn't afraid to play with some supernatural stuff. it might not be the central point of the story/gameplay. e.g it's not just "clear this area and move on". maybe it really is like a survival game that is sprinkled with a few rabid encounters here and there to spice it up.
