A century ago, the poor street urchins who sold newspapers for the likes of Hearst and Pulitzer weren’t technically employed by the newspapers either - they weren’t paid wages, but instead were sold papers at slightly below the advertised value, and had to resell them at full price to make a profit.

They could do some of that (and already do, to some extent), but when we get to settings like ISO, aperture and exposure settings we start to hit the limits of what we can accurately and realistically portray in an entirely virtual experience.

It’s pretty consequential for the economy of the publishers. Physical media all have a modicum of wear and tear and their availability is based on printing runs and eventual re-prints so a “used” market is different and not in direct concurrence with the “new” market.
