Yeah but then you lose what was said to be the saving grace of the Mazda: a usable interior. The Mk8 Golf interior is bad enough to remove the car from consideration entirely.

Depends on the casting. Investment/lost-wax and sand casting aren’t exactly fast or labor-free. Die casting and injection molding are probably pretty safe though.
My MKV GTI had a pair of dim red LEDs serving the same purpose. One of my favorite little interior features of that car.
