No one said they don’t matter, and I agree they’re vital to immersion, but game design theory usually focuses on immersion through gameplay. Mainly keeping the player engaged through tactical and strategic immersion i.e. being in “the zone”. It’s the reason a game like Tetris can feel so immersive despite looking

I certainly see the importance of graphics, they’re one of the most important factors in creating immersion, but it doesn’t necessitate that every game needs photorealism. To me, it comes down to what your aiming for. A game like cyberpunk is aiming for a high bar visually, where as a game like Hades still looks

Retro games wouldn’t exist if there was no appreciation for older aesthetics, especially pixel art. It’s like saying a Rembrandt is trash because it was painted with oil on canvas rather than printed on a high end printer with After Effects.

I agree, but it makes me roll my eyes when the same people who complain about a game being capped at 30 frames and not running in 4K singing Undertale’s praises. A game you could probably run on a Commodore 64.

One of the things that always irks me a bit is when I have my students analyze a retro game, usually from the NES catalog. Invariably they’ll always make a point like “The graphics are bad, buts in an old game”. They simply aren’t able to see artistic merit in a game that isn’t running in HD at 60 frames a second yet.

Explain undertale’s massive popularity then.

Not exactly on topic, but why do some people obsess over graphics and optimal performance like it’s be all, end all of a video games quality and value? Some of those cyberpunk glitches and the general bugginess is not a great start, but I assume they’ll have a lot of it hammered out in the proceedings weeks and

I’m guessing you didn’t play VR? Cuz it definitely gives you*feels* AC7 still has some epic moments. I thought the DLC campaign was hype af and I loved bringing back Stonehenge.

I think they got lazy because consoles have recording features now and you can still do missile cam during the mission by holding down the button. Sucks, but a small gripe imo.

Oh, God. Don’t remind me about Armored Core! AC2 was my first PS2 game and it blew me away. I still have Arena on my shelf. That franchise has plenty of flaws that I hoped would be worked out in modern generations.

I don’t know why it surprised that it handles fine with a controller. It’s an Ace Combat inspired arcade action game, not MS Flight Simulator.

That is pretty weird that they’d make it a central mechanic in the game without safety measures. Though, blaming CDPR for doing crunch in the video game industry is like singling out one basketball player for creating contact.

Now playing

Skip to 7:00 min mark. (Spoilers!) He’s the dude in the mask.

I’d like to add Xenogears to that list. Where in your dad beats your ass in martial arts tournament.

You guys chose the absolute worst time to build a master race  super PC. How many nerds who are stuck at home since March had the exact same idea because bored and going stir crazy. That and scalpers always being a huge pain in the ass. It’s almost not worth the cost and effort at this point.

Its called FOMO.

Ok, well remember when Nintendo released Earth Bound 0 on Wii U? Wasn’t that like $4-5? I don’t think it got to much attention if I recall. But you’re basically saying, Mother 3 is one of those Nintendo hold-outs that we never got to experience and people have been clamoring for it for decades, and Shadow Dragon is

That’s because Shadow Dragon on the DS was complete trash and nearly killed the franchise. If the OG game had been released in the US, it would have a cult following like the Shining Force games. It’s dated now, but it was ahead of its would’ve been remembered as the grandfather  SRPG.

I love hearing fighter pilots of different eras talk about what it’s like. And he lived through several. RIP Chuck.

I think a lot of people were expecting a follow up the the Witcher 3 after that formula did so well for them.
