According to the visual dictionary, the crystal in Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is cracked (presumably because he couldn’t find a non-damaged one). It’s a damaged crystal, so the beam is unstable and it needs those “vents” on the side.

The visual encyclopedia that came out has a cross section of his saber and shows that his crystal is also cracked. So it really looks like he was working with no real solid instructions. One of the reasons that I don't think Snoke is a sith lord of old just a dark side user of a different school.
