I agree with you, but playing devil’s advocate, Afghanistan has shown that a motivated insurgency can do just fine with IEDs and small arms against a superior force. 

In another article they actually say that the tie line was attached and ineffective. They mention that it actually broke at some point. My guess is that they weren’t far enough away from the helicopter.
