It’s not really a matter of safety, it’s a matter of comfort and perception. It is a public perception because turboprops are noisy and archaic looking, as well as being more prone to turbulence as they fly lower than jets. Those factors make general public think that anything with a prop is less safe than a jet.

I completely agree with economy turbos. Unfortunately turbos are FAR more complex than your normal naturally aspirated engine, especially direct inject turbo engines. Sure it seems like it is good for your fuel economy to get a smaller displacement turbo engine, until your car hits 100k, 150k, 200k miles and it is $$$…
