TKO is about showing Earthers as "earning their cred" in the larger galactic community. Showing that they fit in and have something to contribute. This pays off nicely later as it is the humans (whom the alien races have come to respect) who form the backbone of the ISA.

I disagree strongly with the author's dismissal of The Gathering. It sets up several important motivations and character arcs that resonate throughout the run of the show.
