I didn’t always agree with Thompson’s hyperbolic take on things, but boy could that guy string together some dynamic fucking sentences. I wonder what he would make of ‘Murica today? I have a feeling his always over-heating brain would just explode. For me this is a tragic time to be alive.

Oh, being myself a booster of early comic strip cultural importance, and amateur historian of all thing comic strip/book/pulp/g.age illustration, etc., I agree with you. It seems besides us die hards and a few scholars the true impact and import of the original strips has been lost, and it’s not hard to see why with

“Jennifer Connelly is responsible for summoning some of the first prepubescent boners of an entire generation.”

Man, we are way past due for a good Buck Rogers take.

I agree with your take on Fenn, a different type of allure. To paraphrase another poster: We didn’t have the internet then, Sherilynn Fenn (or J.Connelly) was my internet. I think Paxton could have pulled it off but he’s not exactly oozing a tonnage more charisma than Campbell. Saying Estevez is an intriguing choice

Comment of the week for me, kudos!

I’m about the same age and I found Connelly insufferable in Labyrinth a few years earlier. I have a hard time now thinking of a female star whose redeemed themselves more in my eyes however.

Having seen those cutouts, that might be an urban legend I’m inclined to believe. I know if I’d still been working theater projection at the time, I’d have tried to sneak one into the back of my Escort.

Oh, the Altman Popeye. Talk about a strange pop culture creature with an unusually high creative pedigree, that completely succeeded in its aesthetic intentions, only to completely fail critically and financially. I really believe a book needs to be written. Spooooon!

Yeah, I had somehow missed that connection as well, but you can totally see it.

I actually know several people who dislike this movie, but then I also consider these folks to be self-serious sourpusses so...

I remember at the time being a big fan of Peter David’s superhero stuff and him writing that last page of the Comic Buyer’s Guide. He did a piece on the Phantom movie soon after release and gushed over it, saying it was possibly his favorite superhero film thus far. While I don’t necessarily agree with that, his

I’m not sure that’s exactly his point, although I agree there are many treasures that can STILL resonate if viewed through the right contextual lens. I think (and I’m speculating a bit here because his point is ambiguous) but its a question of cultural saturation at the time of modern reinvention. I mean as much as

I remember vaguely hearing this was going to be a thing but my life was much too chaotic then and missed the execution completely. Had no idea Chung was involved. Now I’ve got to watch episodes on youtube; right after I hit this vape a few times.

I love your little thesis here and have to agree with it. I definitely think these movies have, for the most part, been unfairly maligned. None of the three were cinematic masterpieces but I enjoyed them. Also, that Phantom poster is gorgeous, want it bad now. Cheers.

Could there be anything more snootily French then walking out of movies partway through in a huff? Give me a break. I wonder if they demand refunds too, based purely on aesthetic reasons or because it doesn’t reflect their own puritanical values back at them (American viewers), like many an idiot on the internet

Man, I find this woman delightful; bubbly but not too vapid, passive-aggressive in that delicious flirty way, funny and it doesn’t hurt that I find her sexy as all get out as well. I’ve run into several posts wondering if this is an act (some of course much more mean spirited) and of course I can’t be 100% sure but if

Nailed it.

Oh man, I remember this. Just a great riff by Benjamin and so true to life. Man, this show was full of this kind of stuff. I’m starting to think that by the enthusiastic response to this story and the obviously warm place this show holds in the hearts of its fans, maybe a club or con of some kind is in order.

The guy above you is referencing season 4's episode titled “Camp” and you’re referencing one of my personal fav.’s from season 1, the last ep. on UPN titled “Yoko”. That’s awesome though, because I was kind of hoping it would come up. Cheers.
