The motor continues to turn at the same speed but the prop can vary in pitch like a helicopter rotor (in fact I bet they do it with RC helicopter parts). Try 9" thick fiberglass insulation instead of towels. Install it in panels with a one foot air gap between it and the wall. You'll get pretty darned flat absorption across the audible spectrum. Towels may soak up a little high frequency but won't do much for midrange or bass.

Bury your stuff six inches or a foot down in the sand under something. I keep most of my valuables in a waterproof case on me but when I have something I don't want to cary I bring a zip lock bag and bury it.
