Pavement is the “been called underrated by so many people, they’re kind of overrated” of 90s bands. I know that’s a Bill Simmons concept, but it was true of Ben Wallace in the NBA, and it’s true of them, too.
I think the problem with how people remember Live (a band I happily list in my top five and who are definitely better than Bush) is that their biggest single by a wide margin is also one of the two or three worst songs they’ve ever written. Well ... as long as you don’t count anything from Birds of Pray or Songs From…
I mean, I could go on an extended diatribe about how all society is basically band-aiding the fact that we’re all insane, homicidal monkeys, but ... I guess suffice to say that I don’t think there’s a solution that doesn’t involve incremental change made through small adjustments to the rules. Twice in my lifetime…
I’m willing to concede that I may be wrong about his ability to survive the presidency. That’s why I said “I think it’ll kill him” and not “it will kill him.”
By “the disparity at the other end” I just meant at the other end of adulthood, ie the lower age cap. We can’t simultaneously claim that age is just a number, man, but also that young people are inherently unqualified to run things. Seems you agree that that’s hypocritical.
A’ight ... so why can’t anyone run till they’re 35?
edited to add: I have stronger arguments for an age cap than this, but if we’re going with the “the election cycle should act as the filter” argument, then the first thing that needs to be addressed is the disparity on the other end.

This is hugely important. This country leans (moderately) left. The key is that a whole lot of people who would tip the balance just fucking don’t show up if they’re not inspired, especially in certain battleground states where they’re often facing very frustrating and tedious voter suppression techniques.
The list of presidents who were over the age of 60 when they were first elected is, uh ... well, let’s just say it doesn’t speak strongly against age limits.
It’s definitely ageist and I struggle with that. I do not believe that older people should be confined to nursing homes to while out their days, or anything like that. I believe they are valuable and have plenty to contribute to society.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, Warren IS my first choice and for me it’s not even close. I’m just saying that, much like I’d vote to increase the capital gains tax even though it’d have negative consequences for me, I would also vote to add an age limit to the presidency, even though it would have negative consequences for…
There is also that. In fairness to Simmons, if you could make way, way, way more money by hanging out with your buddies and various famous people and chatting for an hour or two, wouldn’t you do it?
This country needs to seriously consider an age cap on presidential candidates. I’d go with “you can’t be over sixty when you start your first term” and you could talk me into fifty-five pretty easily. I say this despite knowing that it would knock out the two best candidates the Democrats are currently fielding…
One of the big differences between Drew and Simmons is that this ...
It really does seem to be the multiplayer where they’re hammering people. That and completionists who want every moveset and outfit available.
as drafted the bill threatens to alter materially the principles of intercollegiate athletics and create local differences that would make it impossible to host fair national championships
That’s a weird leap you’re making from “keeps the conversation going” to “is the sole source of the conversation”
Err, well, I think it’s 100% true, so we’re at something of an impasse I suppose.
I started reading this site three months after it launched. It’s going to be a sad day when the private equity vultures finish destroying it.
