If you can do your own maintgenance and wrenching and find a manual transmission one (or a 540 i too) these are fantastic cars! If you go one gen back the M60b40 motor is much more reliable then the M62. I’d buy it in a heartbeat and make it a 6 speed manual.

Not quite an expert. The Type III is a superb example of what he needs, and a super cool ride! But it is far from a Beetle underneath. There is very little that is swappable between the two.
