I think you’re downright pretending that people are looking for full-length movies to watch on youtube, and that the experience of sifting through millions of videos’ worth of noise is the same as checking the local movie listings, critics’ columns, or even the RT streaming charts. There’s some real irony to the fact

A youtube upload isn’t the same thing as theatrical distribution, and I’d argue one could point particularly towards the 70s and 90s as times when individualistic voices were being rewarded by Hollywood.

I mean, between Star Wars and Jaws, the mid-70s saw a pretty seismic change in how movies are marketed and distributed (namely the move away from roadshow release strategies and a keener focus on opening weekend as a metric of success); it may be silly to make a qualitative assessment of film based on that impact, but

Damn you nailed all those real people who absolutely go up to people and say “you’re an ignorant moron for watching this crap, and Scorsese says so” all the dang time.

The fact that Scorsese can give a career-spanning interview in advance of a new, genuinely-exciting project, and outlets like the avclub only see fit to generate a couple thousand words dunking on his ambivalence towards superhero movies really proves his point about superhero movies.

…this doesn’t seem like the signpost in physical media’s death march you’re making it out to be; like, I buy Blu-rays more than I have in a decade or so (and I know a lot of people turning back to physical media as well, but it’s always online. The only reasons I go into Best Buy are video games and computer

Personally, I’m loving that it’s a spoiler-filled reaction essay for a movie that is only on three screens in LA! I think it’s safe to do for a movie most of us won’t bother to see so spoilers aren’t a big deal, but it’d make more sense to describe the movie without assuming we’ve seen it.

I hope the blade is also cutting at people overly fixated and annoyed by dei efforts in media (cough cough critical drinker), because otherwise this will feel like just another reactionary voice overblowing the (definitely awkward at times but imo ultimately worth it) effort to not just put white guys front and center

I always thought that came around eight years ago, with the stringent bully PC Principal; there was no both-sides-ing that one imo

a job chapping my ass! i mean a real job! while you’re at it, you get a job too!

Definitely not serious, mainly amused that four years later people are still grousing about how he could’ve kept his mouth shut when asked if he liked Endgame lol

As I cross over the hill I’ve prided myself on 1) trying to keep up with culture and 2) not letting the stuff I don’t like turn me into a crank. Well Matty Healy has made a crank outta me. That boy needs to stop being such a clown and get a job.

he doesn’t mention marvel movies in this interview; the fact that people are still bringing that into any discussion he has about film shows why the AVClub is able to pull a statement from his press tour for the freaking movie he made and people will flock to the comments to ask why he dare say something about movies.

Thing is, in the source article, they did! But the avclub is a media vulture, stripping context and information for the most reactionary-baiting snark possible.

looks directly at camera

Exactly; that’s why they scrub the laughter out of standup specials.

It would be a mistake to conflate format with genre; The Office is definitely a sitcom and is widely known as one.

…cause it’s a spin-off

This only works for single screen theaters but a few places I’ve been have speakers in the bathroom so you’re missing out on less if you gotta go.

well that’s bleak to see: someone taking the clickbait writing on avclub at face value.
