How many defense attorneys do you encounter on a daily basis? As several people on this thread have mentioned, gallows humor is a common coping mechanism.

Literally every accused rapist is entitled to a defender under the constitution. If we (as we should) bring more rapists to trial, there will be an ever growing list of defense attorneys who need to step in and make sure they are granted a fair trial. What you don’t seem to realize is that there is no single “most qualified” person for cabinet positions. There are many people with very similar backgrounds and qualifications.
