Mmmm, the number of white people that are citizens of Japan is kinda...y’know...tiny. Where as we do sorta have a substantial number of Japanese Americans here. Y’see where your comparison falls apart?

The question is why the hell choose a white actor in the first place? Why is that our media default?
Honestly, the entire premise doesn’t really work in U.S Culture. Light’s motivations are pretty intensely derived from his background as an honor student in Japan, and the drama deals with the problems in the Japanese legal system, and why Light chooses to subvert it for his own ends.
That has it’s own sticky problems to it. By the framing of the original story, L and Light are two sides of the same coin. They both do terrible things to achieve their ends, but their motivations are different. Light at least starts with a morally good intention, even if it quickly devolves into a god complex mixed…
Except they aren’t even going for that character trait. He’s a strung out looking nerd on the bottom of the social ladder by the look of him. He’s clearly being modeled on the under-dog archetype to further make him appealing to U.S audiences by playing off one of our favorite hero types: The nobody that rises for the…
It’s...not quite that. It’s not about the academics, its about what the academics do for your entire life’s career. After the Japanese Bubble Economy of the 80s went kaboom, a LOT of unemployment happened. I mean a friggen LOT of unemployment. So much so that people competed really freaking fiercely for work. Since…
That says there’s something very wrong with our culture then if we have to have things so radically changed to be appealing.
Thats because they don’t live in a diversified ethnic culture. Japan is kinda, y’know, homogenized. But this isn’t a movie for Japanese viewers. Its for people primarily U.S based, and welp, there ARE Japanese Americans, and this tells them “No, you’re not as appealing as a white boy. Sorry. We can’t accept this story…
The problem here is half this movie ISN’T localized. This very trailer acknowledges that Ryuk and the Death Note are of Japanese origin. So why the fuck is it suddenly in Seattle? They’re trying to pull this movie in two different directions to please two different audiences. Or rather, bait-and-switch any anime fan…
They’re trying to play off of America’s favorite hero: The outsider underdog who wants to do good, but doesn’t have the power till he does. It doesn’t work for this plot.
Because they want to play both fields. They want to draw in the anime fans who don’t want a knock-off story that was never part of the canon (See the failure that was Black Butler’s film). But they also feel insecure unless they’re making sure that the protagonist is as marketable white bread as possible for general…
The question to ask is why is a (Relatively) pretty blonde white boy the default leading protagonist choice?
I...Think I get this reference?
This dude seriously doesn’t know his own company’s history, huh? A huge selling point of the PS2 was it’s backwards compatability. Nobody likes having to buy their games over again, and nobody likes having to have every console under the sun stacked up in their entertainment room. It was a huge edge over the Gamecube…
Ever since P3, I’ve always gravited towards the Bro types (Although Akihiko is quite nice in a Mister Mom sorta way). But alas, you literally have to be a female to even date the guys in P3, and as a gay guy, that’s always an aspect of dating games that bug me. There’s an over emphasis on being a chick, and being…
I’m of two minds.I absolutely hate the “Fat is fine” mindset. Its not. We’re not meant to carry that kind of weight. Medically proven time and again that unless you’re an aberrant anomoly, the more weight you pack on, the more your health is going to suffer, and the more people are just naturally turned off to someone…
Courage the Cowardly Dog is well overdue for a return I think.
Juuuust so you know btw, there’s a single player campaign mode due out this fall, IIRC. So you may still get your wish.

Looking at the comments, it does seem like this game is more designed around wish fulfillment rather than looking to be a game just anyone can take off the shelf.
