I’m not saying that no Black characters exist who are independent of a white predecessor in the same role. Sam Wilson as the Falcon is one example. My issue is specifically with Black characters who are derivations other heroes.

Both of DC’s most prominent Black Supermen, Steel (created by Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove) and Final Crisis’ Kalel (created by Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnke), were introduced as reactions

There’s no way Walker can keep the shield now, is there? The question is, does the shield get passed on, or does it get destroyed?

We just call it “Black Dude Dies First.” I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Kids these days can’t even cry their way through figuring out how Optimus Prime transforms anymore. When I had the original toy (with trailer), I had to transform Optimus Prime seven miles uphill through foot-high snow. Both ways!

See, this is the problem with these movies. I had to actually look up each of these actors in these roles, because I don’t remember anything about their characters in the movies. Which illustrates a bigger point that people keep making.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Good on you, Kotaku, for recognizing an amusing throwaway line for what it was, rather than trying to impart any hidden meaning on it.

I realized I needed to suspend my disbelief when Paper Boi casually used a thumbdrive to download what were probably corporate secrets. Even the lowest rent government computers with no classified information on them no longer allow thumbdrives. By the time they were accidentally on a magrail to Hong Kong (and

But would you pay for it...in black and white?

I had low expectations for this movie after reading reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. As with all of the recent Godzilla movies, it could do with a lot less human storyline. I watch these movies to see kaiju beat the shit out of each other. I couldn’t care less about what Millie Bobby Brown thinks about this

Besides the minimum wage jobs that they hand out to high schoolers (which can be had at any other number of service industry employers), what, exactly, is worth saving about the theater industry?

I think this is a great critique of the show from the perspective of race. I see what they’re trying to do, but they’re mixing up examples of overt and covert racism in ways that make the show jarring to watch through that lens.

John Walker took Hawkeye’s spot as the most unlikeable Marvel superhero for me this week. First, the dude’s face is even more punchable outside of the mask than inside. Second, they changed his background from being a Marine to a soldier. Why downgrade? Third, three Medals of Honor? I know this is a comic book, but

I think they missed the boat by about a year on this one.

There’s something wrong with those legs. I’ve seen bodybuilders, both natural and roided up, and none have ever had legs that look like that. I guess maybe they were going for otherworldly musculature, but it just comes off as distracting and weird.

The rumor that Coates was onboard to write the new Superman film showed up about a week ago. It was accompanied by a rumor that it would be a rebooted Superman movie with a Black Superman, and that WB wanted Michael B. Jordan to play to role. I forget which movie site published that article, but it’s not an inference.

While I agree that this is pretty neat, I doubt the executives at WB are familiar with enough deep lore on their own properties to know that in 2008, DC introduced a Black Superman from another dimension based on President Obama. Or that there is another Kryptonian with the same powers plus super-intelligence named

I HATE that the new Superman is going to be Black. It just shouts “meaningless pandering. There are so many good DC characters who are actually Black. Cyborg was outstanding in the Snyder cut. There was an opening for Martian Manhunter (not technically Black, but that’s the form he “chooses” while in human form). Jon
