I’d like to think there is a changing tide.
I’d like to think there is a changing tide.
Show us the evil social justice unicorns. Again, you can’t.
This whole situation is mind boggling and depressing honestly. The fact that these people are still trolling her even after Nintendo has let her go really shows that this isn’t even about gaming anymore, these people are just out to fuck with and harass her and her family for the hell of it.
It is at this point kinda of impossible to exhonerate gaming culture for having been the bubbling stew that spawned these anthropomorphic farts, but it is still a very specific segment of that community that does these mad, mad things.
I can understand why Nintendo might have a problem with that, but their passivity in the run-up to Rapp’s firing is so, so cynical and sad. Just as an employee has a responsibility of sorts to protect their employer, so does the employer has a responsibility to their employees, especially in the face of something like…
You’re an idiot.
I’m pretty afraid of the world we’re living in when a journalist’s family gets harassed over a story they write. And we’re not even talking about a story written about some powerful politician, shady business man or crime family. This is literally all about video game titties.
Patrick, you’re doing damn fine reporting for continuing to follow up on this. I had no idea folks were still looking into Allison or the second job. I kind of figured, if that info ever came out, we’d be beyond this onto the next story. But you’ve kept it up and have continued to fairly look at all the angles.
For the great sin of covering this topic, the personal details of my family have been investigated, with harassers finding ways to target us in real-life. That we cannot even have a discussion without such extremes shows how toxic this has all become.
I don’t think those two things are as equivalent as you’re making them out to be ...
If I can’t fap to loli boobs while I am playing my game then allison rapp should personally apologize to me for having nothing to do with the boob slider being removed. THIS IS OUTRAGE. /s
What does this even mean? This story and its journalistic substructure has nothing to do with what the upper levels of Gawker Media have done.
So....just to make sure I’m clear, there are real actual human beings who:
Goddamn those social justice warriors if it weren’t for them we wouldn’t have to give out all these death threats.
I never really understood this whole mess. It’s not our business why she was fired, nor is it in any way acceptable to campaign for it.
Times like these, I wonder if gaming is truly a hobby or just a reason for hatemongers to congregate. It’s video games. How does something as entertaining as video games result in such hatred for other people? It’s a scary time indeed.
I don’t know, it seems like things like Swatting tend to come up more with video game streamers and companies than anything else.
My sympathies, Patrick. This is obviously a tricky topic for a reporter to cover fully and accurately, and I’m sorry that deranged individuals have decided to attack you (and your family) because they disagree with your coverage decisions.
This is all quite complex, obviously, and I ask that readers who want to debate and discuss the issues at hand do so in way that’s respectful of each other and the people involved. Patrick outlined numerous issues in this and his prior stories that were more focused on actual issues of translation, localization,…
Meanwhile, Rapp has reported that harassment against her has intensified. This past weekend, Rapp tweeted about her family getting hassled, their phone numbers and home addresses magically appearing online, and one individual claiming they’ve filed a police report, hoping investigators would knock on her door.
