Actually I read that story - the twins were from the same father. The reason they were separate races was because the parents were of mixed heritage, and in rare cases twins from racially diverse parents can express both races. Here's the article if you want to check it out:

In the NY Times article it specifically states that they could not be separated because they would likely die or be otherwise hurt. Why wish for something that can't happen, and instead be grateful they have a loving and supportive family, and great prospects?
