The elephant in the room is that Glantz’s study did not have adequate controls for past smoking. Any increased COPD risk that they found in dual users and in vapers who formerly smoked, is almost certainly due to residual confounding with past smoking.

Even among smokers, it takes decades to develop COPD. Yet if you believe what the study authors imply here, vaping somehow increased participants’ COPD risk in just a few years of use – vapes have only been available since around 2007, and their data collection ended in 2016.
