It’s usually based on complaints or personal experiences of the inspectors.
When you buy or stream a song you’re paying for the right to listen to yourself, not to perform it publicly.
None of those licenses are broadcast licenses. You don’t have those rights from streaming, mp3s, radio or otherwise. You need ASCAP/BMI licenses at a minimum. I don’t know what sports bars need.
Yeah, if they’re streaming, it’s also paid for. But what if it is mp3s? Somebody bought those songs too, right?
My mother’s a musician, we were just talking about this. The radio and TV already pay licenses; but a bar having in-house music through a jukebox, live band, or even the bartender’s on-demand streaming service does indeed need to have a license from the publishers to feature their songs. It seems like it’d be smarter…
Offhand, I don’t know the answer to that. Bars and restaurants have to pay more for cable and/or satellite TV when the public can watch it. I have no idea about broadcast TV or radio. Probably not, but I can’t say for sure.
When you pay for a download, your have purchased the right to listen to it yourself in a private setting. You still have to get a license to play it for the public.
That’s a fair point, but I’m wondering if that doesn’t give someone the rights to play that song for a group, like movies always have when you buy them. They’re for playing in your home, but not in an auditorium, for example. Of course, I’m sure there would be a similar stipulation on a streaming service.
When you buy songs (a cd, record, spotify subscription, etc), you have a license for the personal use of it (in your car, at a backyard barbecue, on a boombox as you walk down the street, etc). The problem is when you’re using it for public purposes (e.g., creating an atmosphere at your restaurant, using it in a…
Must be the playlist - if they’re just broadcasting radio, the fee has already been paid, but if I’m a bar or restaurant I know my patrons don’t want to listen to the DJs or the ads, so it’s gotta be a playlist.

Well.
I’ve previously applauded the bar industry for being more willing recently to confront the negative aspects of…

Some people claim that the “Build from Australia” strategy is a surefire win, but you can also win from South America. The key I think is to hold the line from the Middle East through Afghanistan and the Urals.
Something tells me that a BK taco, like a Jack In The Box taco, should never be eaten while sober. BK should really stick to burgers; it’s in the name after all.
And then prepare for the most awkward “what’re you in for?” conversation imaginable.
Don’t open things at the store. Buy some mini chocolate chips in the baking aisle if you aren’t getting enough chips in your ice cream.
