yeah, I think that's the problem with most of the mad max universe. You need to understand the timeline. Most people think it's post apocalyptic starting with the first one.
Thunderdome was missing one thing: a better explanation of the rest of the world. Though all the movies vague... I think putting the world of Thunderdome into context would have helped immensely.
Also, the Pursuit Special looks best all shiny and new in the first movie
