There are a lot of icky racial things in Airplane when looked at with 2019 sensibility.
The idea that an educational institution is nothing more than the sum of their curriculum is...misguided.
Like I know shitting on USC is really missing the point of this whole thing, but I think it might be my favorite part because I’m petty that way.
Yes Avatar is structurally similar and “makes sense”, but it also strips the book of all of its style and character - the characters in Avatar are dull as dishwater (well, the bad guy was pretty good in a scenery chewing sort of way).
And instead of it being about how a white guy can Arab better than the Arabs it can be about how a white guy can Native American better than the Native Americans!
Buried in a random comments section is a “high profile” place to raise this? On a site that routinely writes entire articles about what a dumpster fire the NCAA is and how it’s treatment of athletes is hypocritical and shameful? Ohhkayy....
But do you have a life size image of him that you bow to every day and ask for forgiveness? No? Hater.
Hey buddy. This thread is for complaining about NCAA tournament selections. Complaining about how the NCAA and big time college athletics in general are an exploitative shit-show is down the hall.
Yeah, I grew up in Palo Alto and now live in Mountain View and I feel like for the 30 years I’ve been aware of it they’ve been trying to and failing to make downtown San Jose a thing. I mean, it’s not a bad place, it just somehow manages to have 0 character. Otoh the downtown has a bunch of decent bars and restaurants…
I’d say Technique > Size/Strength. I’m sure Hearns is plenty strong, but if you know how to measure distance and throw a punch (and that guy sure seemed like he did), you’re going to do damage if the person doesn’t know how to defend themselves (e.g. not hang out in punching range).
Not really. The agent also should have negotiated billing.
Also: You really need to squint hard to define Solo as a failure. It was one of the top grossing movies of the year. I guess insofar as it wasn’t in the realm of an MCU tentpole or one of the “main” Star Wars movies, sure, but that’s not really a reasonable yardstick.
Many Star Wars fans didn’t care for The Last Jedi, and if you look around the internet, you can find well reasoned opinions about why. That doesn’t change that it *also* was subject to a huge volume of racist and sexist attacks by people who I can only define as trolls.
“...you’d think NBA fans would skew more progressive than than the general population...”
I think this kind of makes the point that “SJW” is kind of used as a catchall for any group of people that you don’t like who use the language of social justice. Like if you divorce the term of context, it sounds laudable: “I’m fighting for social justice!”. Who is against justice, social or otherwise?
New Deadspin feature: Let’s Remember Some Commercials.
I’m trying to imagine a scenario where someone asks me to help them download the Uber app, I initially blow them off (I’m busy, geez), and then somehow they manage to get me to hold still long enough to tell me that they just got out of prison for a murder they didn’t commit after 27 years *and* that they now draw…
Wow. Wrecked’em.
I’ve seen that commercial, and the answer is “sign up to kill people”.
