I wonder if Graydon Carter even has the self-awareness to realize he’s part of the problem?

She was offside. Only by a hair, but she was offside. It was also definitely a penalty - she kicked her leg away as she was about to shoot. Var + ref got both decisions right.  In the latter, it’s reasonable to argue for a red card for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.  So be content that it was a penalty, and

I agree. She was offside, but very narrowly. But VAR means you follow the letter of the law, much as I agree it didn’t affect play. That’s just a consequence of VAR. There will be some point that you move a millimeter in one direction you’re offside, and a millimeter in the other and you’re on. In a way, it’s a shame

That looks like something designed to fool you into thinking it’s delicious scone, clotted cream and jam. That’s a more elaborate version of the disappointment experienced when biting into a chocolate chip cookie, only to discover they were raisins.

Thank you for the Red Rising commentary. Although it comes too late for me, let it be warning for others. Agree with your take on the author’s implicit love for fascism, and how strong and beautiful people must lead. The other problem I had was that the plot often required Darrow to stupidly trust someone with

Oh, I understand why. It just underlines how dangerous non-S.I. units are. Although I feel better about my tolerance for alcohol since moving to the States.

PS. “Imperial” measurements date from when we were an Empire, not a kingdom! It was, ahem, a while ago now. Empire-Emperor, Kingdom-King, Country-Boris Johnson,

But all the conversions, and remembering whether you are in foot-pounds or inches-whatevers, introduce plenty of opportunity for error, and get in the way of solving the actual problem. In physics, there are occasions in which we set c=1 to make life easier for ourselves. Why make life more complicated? :-)

*tonne of fun. It’s in Europe....

Even your gallons are too small...

That’s exactly right. I was born into imperial units, but we switched to metric when I was young. Metric was completely intuitive to me. I’ve now been in the States for nine continuous years and once again understand that 72F is a nice day to be outside.

No engineer in Europe practices conversions. We all learned purely in metric. My Dad’s exercise books were fascinating to me. All the math around conversion from one Imperial (“English”) unit to another...it’s amazing you had any brain capacity left over for actual physics.

Yes.  Also, lower gravity on Mars means that “up” and “down” are less clearly differentiated there than on Earth. So a device that relies on an oscillating mass is more likely to wobble in position there, if other conditions aren’t right.

That would fit, too.  But enhanced human is way cooler...

That Data for Progress article is damning. Thanks for sharing. It’s really hard to argue Lipinski is a Democrat.

This trailer is way ahead of anything we’ve seen from this franchise for a very long time.

And he’s hot on the trail of a new character, played by Natalia Reyes, who is being protected by yet another terminator, this one played by Mackenzie Davis.

I’m concerned about the dessert dust that she needed to protect herself from.  Are people snorting crumbled meringue now?

No, not even remotely analogous. You’re telling creators that you expect them to create in a certain way, to a specification that, to your mind, is the correct way to create. And if they don’t magically divine your specification, and create to that (and presumably magically divine everyone else’s specifications and

Great article. Important data that show the damage these posturing and cruel fools are deliberating imposing on the vulnerable.

Why should we get to “expect” anything of a show’s creators?  They are building something at their own pace.  It’s bizarre to criticize them for that.
