I would also add that while XII had the outlines of great characters they never really developed them fully enough. The game was severely lacking in the little moments of the journey to get me really invested in their adventure.

Even with the short commings they had with the previous games. These guys are really talented. Just look at the game, it's very beautiful and obviously very well done. I wouldn't count them out as idiots, just because they couldn't find the "sweet spot" with the two games. They had their short commings and mistakes. :)
