I could write an essay about how chickenshit it was of both the show and the character to pretend pre-soul Spike and post-soul Spike have no moral relationship. It doesn't even make sense in the show's own mythology or continuity or even in how it handles Spike. He has an arc, or he doesn't.

Season 4 has the burden of essentially retooling the show. All in all, I think they pulled it off. And yeah, season 4 is really screamingly funny at times. There's a lot to love there. It's so fun, despite the warts.
