There was a phone keyboard app (not sure if it still exists) called 8pen that asked the question, what if the smartphone preceded the QWERTY keyboard, what would a keyboard on a phone look like if that one didn’t exist. It was a fascinating idea, but ultimately a pretty terrible app. Swype is much faster and easier.

I lift mine up because it makes it easier to clean off the windshield afterward. If you lift them up you have a solid piece of smooth glass running all the way down to the vents.
