I think it looks horrible, but according to magazine tests back then, it handled just fine. Unlike just about any other cruiser on the market. Guess there’s no way BMW engineers could be made to design a bad handling motorcycle.

Ages ago Ford in England took a Morris Mini apart to analyze how much it’d cost to build. To their surprise it cost more than it sold for, possible only because of state subsidies. It was but one reason for the decline of the British automotive industry.

I ride a lot in Sweden (close to Copenhagen, where I live) and occasionally come across the widened stretches of roads prepared for jet landings. The Viggen and Draken were both built for takeoff and landings on 500 yard long runways. The way the Viggens landed suggests a very strong undercarriage.

I first heard of it when travelling to what was once Communist Czechoslovakia. Different cultures have different ways of dealing with adversaries, and given the way castles were most often built down there, defenestration would seem to be an effective method.

Having once (four decades ago) run a diesel tractor dry, and gone through the trouble of getting it running again, I was wondering about that too.

Nice kind of malfunction: Plenty of power left, controlled descent, fine landing, no injuries but only happy (or at least relieved) passengers. But the planes have recovered from worse situations before, like when these to Avro Anson collided in midair, and the pilot of the upper one still managed to bring them down…

That was my first thought too. But then of course it’d be justfied (...a friggin’ truck...)
