"Unabated" is the justification for blowing the play dead. Normally an offsides player doesn't draw a whistle. But if they make contact, or have an unabated path to the QB (or, I guess, holder), they blow the whistle for safety reasons instead of letting the play go on.

For what it's worth, I was at the game last night, was planning on counting how many #27 jerseys I saw, and saw zero. There are clearly some idiots out there but it was a very, VERY small number.

The only thing I can think of is possibly less errors in the more recent era. The fewer errors (and resulting runs with no associated RBI), the higher the ratio of RBIs to runs would be.

Probably not the first time those players have witnessed a furry snatch.

This is a pretty bad one I took after a Caps playoff game this Spring.
