It's been awhile since I was actively in the fold, so I will say my impressions are a bit dated perhaps, but the church school I went too was really solidly in that pew so to speak.

The LCMS is pretty damn conservative and emphasizes complete acceptance of the teachings of the Bible, so it wasn't really suprising they embraced Revelations with open arms.
I went to a parochial Lutheran school (Missouri Synod aka "we're the conservative Lutherans!") until 8th grade and Rapture films were a big deal in the mid-70s there. I vaguely remember watching this film in my middle school years. As a pre-teen with a highly overactive imagination, it scared the shit out me. I…
Wow, you mean I might get the chance to see Trent Reznor in a tux come Oscar season again?
Finally, went to see a friend's band after promising we'd do so for months (They were quite good!). Today I start the annual ritual of watching classic horror films in preparation for Halloween. Today, its Nosferatu, which given my current online classes in German, I'm going to attempt to watch with the German…
Thank you. I now have an earworm that will not subside for at least half a day unless I hear an annoying catchy pop song to chase it out.
I'm going to head back a few decades and mention Dianne Carroll's TV show, "Julia" and Julia and Corey Baker. As a single parent child being raised by a mom, it was the first time I saw on TV a parent-child situation that mirrored my own that I could remember. There were tons of single dads (usually with…
Crying is the saddest break up song ever put to tape. I can't listen to that song without losing it it.
Back in the late 80s I worked in an office for an ag company that was put in the middle of nowhere, so going out for lunch wasn't feasible Since we had an hour lunch, the office staff would commandeer the TV set in the conference room and we'd all watch AMC. I'm still not a huge soap opera fan, but hanging with the…
Glenn is a type of North Jersey boy which tends to be not quite a nice person in personal interactions, aka an asshole. However, in their heyday, the original line up was a fun live show. Would have liked to see them in 2016, but I fear I'd be overwhelmed by the third wave fans and their Hot Topic Misfits shirts. …
Oh dear Almighty, can you stop courting musicians for the great gig in the sky? 2016 has not been a great year…
The issue I have is that they do a very safe version of the culture, that unless its someone who is there for comedic value or a child character, it is very, very idealized character and reeks of "here! behold the noble savage". As someone with native American ancestry, Pocahontas really irked me to no end for that…
The man made 13 films and its amazing how much he influenced the visual looks of many, many movies afterwards. There is a traveling exhibit going around North America: https://www.youtube.com/wat…. IF you can get to see it, its phenomenal. And yes, now that you mention it, that bar *does* look like it came straight…
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others,
This song is for you my brother!
Every time I watch a trailer for a "space travel movie", it amazes me how Stanley Kubrick pretty much set the standard look for someone "traveling through space".
I haven't read the Earthsea series in years—I'm going to have to dig through my book collection and find it. Love Ursula K. LeGuin. I read everything she and Andre Norton wrote in my middle and high school years..
After, watching the Bridget Jones movies, I have this urge to just bitch slap every single damn character in the movie. I'll pass on this one..
How could you forget Wayne Cockran's "Last Kiss"? Honorable mention for best ever song about death? "People Who Died" by Jim Carroll
Everyone needs to read "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan. Its rather appalling how industrial agriculture manipulates what the government proposes as a "healthy" diet. If it says "low fat" you can bet that its loaded with corn syrup or another version of sugar.
This sir, is not jam. Says the woman who has been canning for years for the zombie apocalypse This is some hipster mash up that is very, very wrong.
